NHL, NHLPA announce 2025 4 Nations Face-Off

On February 2, 2024, the NHL and NHL Players’ Association disclosed a novel event for the upcoming 2024-25 NHL season named the 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off. This event will showcase an international tournament featuring NHL players representing Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States. Set to unfold in February 2025, the 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off will be hosted in two North American cities—one in Canada and the other in the United States. Notably, the traditional NHL All-Star Weekend will be omitted from the 2024-25 season.

Scheduled from February 12 to 20, the 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off will encompass seven games played over a nine-day span, inclusive of two designated training/practice days on February 10 and February 11.

Each participating team will consist of 23 NHL players (20 skaters and 3 goalies) chosen by their respective National Associations—Hockey Canada, Finnish Ice Hockey Association, Swedish Ice Hockey Association, and USA Hockey. Eligible players must hold an NHL contract for the 2024-25 season and be on an NHL roster as of December 2, 2024. The NHL and NHLPA will reveal the roster announcement dates, with each National Association initially selecting six players during the summer and finalizing their complete rosters later in the year.

The tournament will adhere to NHL rules, and teams will engage in three Round Robin games, employing a point system—3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an overtime/shootout win, 1 point for an overtime/shootout loss, and 0 points for a regulation loss. The two teams with the best tournament records will progress to a one-game Final. Round Robin game overtime will adopt a three-on-three sudden-death format for a 10-minute period, followed by a three-round shootout. The one-game Final's overtime format will entail full-strength sudden death through successive 20-minute periods until a team scores.

The announcement took place during the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend, featuring NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh, and NHL All-Stars Connor McDavid, Sebastian Aho, Elias Pettersson, and Auston Matthews. Further details about the 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off will be disclosed in due course, and interested fans can sign up for updates at https://www.nhl.com/events/2025-nhl-4-nations-faceoff.
